THE DEMISE OF JOEL HETMAN

Writer, Director

Genre: Drama. Horror

Told through three conflicting points of view, a grieving husband recounting a night he cannot escape, a perceptive son piecing together fragments of memory and doubt, and the murdered wife herself speaking from beyond the grave, a quiet domestic tragedy slowly unravels along a desolate, moonlit road. Based on The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce.

This was my first experience adapting a story into a screenplay. I wanted the film to retain its literary origins, so we chose to preserve the voiceovers and structure the scenes around them. Rather than conventional horror, the story is more of a supernatural drama that explores a wide range of human emotions, which is what initially drew me to it. Working on this project also taught me the importance of light and shadow, particularly the expressive potential of shadows, and how they could be used deliberately to build an eerie atmosphere. The production itself was demanding, a two night overnight shoot in the mountains. Despite the challenges, I remain very proud of what we were able to accomplish together as a team.
